The 5-Finger Exercise

A small exercise that gives fingers 4 and 5 real work to do. Playing the first two bars well is good enough. The last two bars are a bonus, so no pressure. Go slowly, keep your hand still, and two minutes a day is enough.

Step by step

How to practise it

  1. Right hand alone. Finger 5 on F sharp, then 4, 3, 2, 1 down to B. Play four slow loops.
  2. Keep your hand still. One finger for each note. Press each key all the way down.
  3. Left hand alone. Finger 2 on B, then finger 1 on D.
  4. Hands together, still at the slow speed.
  5. Speed up one step at a time. When four loops feel easy, try the next speed. Not before.
  6. Bonus, only if you want it. Choose All 4 bars. The left hand adds finger 4 on G, then finger 5 on all three F sharps. No pressure.
